For years we have been witness to thousands of secret documents from governments around the world, and victim of thousands more in malicious hacks from malicious groups around the world. We are constantly tracked by companies throughout the internet through the use of third party cookies. And, worst of all, our personal lives are for sale to any company that wants to exploit us for cash.

What are we to do about this blatant lack of security, and lack of privacy? It is time to play hard ball.

Let's talk about dealing with the public internet, you need to operate in a way that keeps everything encrypted, the best tool for the job is HTTPS Everywhere, developed by Tor and EFF, this tool forces all web-sites capable of running with SSL to run securely all the time.

The next issue is to prevent yourself from being tracked online. DoNotTrackMe blocks over 600 companies from tracking your every move on the Internet. Created by Albine, there are extensions for Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Safari.

Now, you need to know what is going on, on web-sites. The tool for the job is Ghostery. This tool will tell you how many social networks and advertising companies are attempting to track you whether with plugins, cookies, trackers, even pixel images.

Now, joining new social networks may look like a good idea, especially the next hot thing, who knows what is going to over throw Facebook tomorrow, but is it a good idea to join, and when you want to leave, is it even possible? Here comes the solution, AccountKiller has a database of 500 web-sites, it explains how to unsubscribe from just about any web-site, and best of all, warns you if that specific web-site is impossible to close an account on.

NoScript, a perfect tool to prevent any untrusted scripts from running. Worried about a web-site, but need to check it for any possible valuable information, using NoScript prevents any unauthorized launching of scripts.

With these 5 tools, you can begin to take your life back online. Next week I will show you the DarkNet through the eyes of Tor, I2P and Freenet, perfect alternatives to the open Internet.
